Ending Violence Against Women and Protecting Women Human Rights Defenders

Mission:

Femena supports women human rights defenders (WHRDs), their organizations, and feminist movements in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Asia regions, with a particular focus on contexts where civic space is shrinking or closed as well as contexts impacted by conflict and extremism.

Impact:

Femena has become a "go-to source" for critical and timely analysis, documentation, and advocacy on important issues related to the situation of women, WHRDs and feminist organizing in the MENA and Asia regions through reports and articles.

Femena's Yara WHRD Center is a critical support for WHRDs in the MENA region.

Channel Grants:

2025-27: Channel made a two-year grant to FEMENA to continue supporting their mission in supporting women human rights defenders (WHRDs), their organizations, and feminist movements in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Asia regions. Their work will focus on areas impacted by conflict and extremism, as well as where civic space is shrinking.

2023: Channel made a grant to Femena to support their mission to advocate for women human rights defenders (WHRDs) and feminist movements in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Asia. The grant supports Femena’s technical assistance, training, and advocacy work on their three main initiatives: violence prevention; protecting and expanding civic space; and the Yara WHRD Center, a space for WHRDs from the MENA region to gather and “learn about the importance of self-care, wellness, and holistic security.” This includes programs such as WHRD Voices, an initiative focused on WHRDs in Afghanistan, Iran, North Africa, and Palestine, that highlights their work through video interviews.
