DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Standing Above the Clouds on November 17\, 5:30 – 8:30 pm\, at Morgridge Hall\, WARF Centennial Room 7560\, UW-Madison\, 1205 University Avenue\, Madison\, WI 53706.  Organized by Makamae Sniffen (MEd\, MA)\, the screening is in collaboration with UW-Madison’s Indigenous Student Center\, APIDA Student Center\, and Nelson Institute in celebration of Native November. \n\n\nThe Standing Above the Clouds documentary follows Native Hawaiian mother-daughter activists as they stand to protect Mauna Kea\, a mountain sacred to them\, from the building of the world’s largest telescope. This documentary provides an example of continued Indigenous assertion of sovereignty\, resistance\, and resilience. Stemming from this\, the hope and goal of the documentary is to encourage deeper\, critical conversations around re-matriation\, Indigeneity\, and the importance of elevating and listening to diverse voices. \nThe event is free and will provide light refreshments. The screening will end with a Q&A and reflection. DESCRIPTION:Channel Foundation in collaboration with the World Affairs Council co-organized a lunch with Brian Concannon\, the Founder and Executive Director of Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) held on February 26\, 2024 at the World Affairs Council. \nThe event was part of the World Affairs Council Fellowship Program\, which “offers a unique professional development opportunity to a small group of greater Seattle’s business and community leaders” including meetings with “carefully selected high-caliber international experts who offer unparalleled insight into current global issues.” It is open only to the 2023-2024 Fellows. \nBrian Concannon\, a human rights lawyer who graduated from Georgetown University Law Center\, was invited as a guest speaker for the event. Concannon’s expertise is in human rights in Haiti and US policy\, having spent almost a decade living in working in Haiti from 1995 to 2004 at both the united Nations and the  Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI) in Port-au-Prince. He founded IJDH in 2004\, after returning to the United States following a coup d’etat in Haiti. Concannon hopes to address the current state of Haiti and its continued challenges with political upheaval and human rights.

DESCRIPTION:The Channel Foundation was delighted to announce the April 22\, 2023\, screening and discussion in Madison\, Wisconsin\, of a new documentary film\, Crossings\, about women’s leadership in the process of bringing peace to the Korean Peninsula and featuring long-time Channel partner Women Cross DMZ.   \nThe screening took place April 22\, 2023\, 6 pm\, at the Marquee Cinema\, Union South\, UW-Madison\, 1308 W Dayton St #245\, Madison\, WI 53715\, and was co-presented by the UW Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) and the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD).  The screening was followed by a Q & A session with the director\, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem\, and Christine Ahn\, Founder/Executive Director of Women Cross DMZ\, and was free and open to the public.\n \nThe info about the WUD screening at Union South can be found here. \nIn Crossings\, a group of international women peacemakers sets out on a risky journey across the demilitarized zone (known as the DMZ) between North and South Korea\, calling for an end to a 70-year war that has divided the Korean peninsula and its people.  Comprised of Nobel Peace Laureates and renowned activists like Gloria Steinem and Ahn\, the intrepid team faces daunting challenges as they forge a path with their Korean sisters toward peace and reconciliation.  \nCrossings is a powerful tool to educate audiences on the history of the unresolved Korean War\, the role of women in forging peace\, and the responsibility of the U.S. to negotiate a peace agreement with North Korea.  As Forbes magazine put it\, “Crossings is an inspiring film about activism – in which a group of women set out to accomplish a seemingly impossible mission and\, despite serious obstacles and setbacks\, succeeds in making an important statement.”  \nMore about the film and past and upcoming screenings can be found here\, and the film’s trailer can be seen here.

Given their awards at a ceremony in Dublin\, Ireland on Friday May 27\, 2022\, the winners include human rights defenders from five countries: \n\nLiah Ghazanfar Jawad\, Afghanistan\nAmeira Osman Hamid\, Sudan\nRepresentative from Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ)\, Zimbabwe\nJavier del Tránsito and María del Tránsito Salvatierra\, Mexico\nWoman human rights defender\, Belarus (name withheld for security reasons)\n\nEstablished in 2005\, the Front Line Defenders Human Rights Defenders at Risk Award honors human rights defenders (HRDs) who\, through their non-violent work\, are courageously making outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of the human rights of others. \nFront Line Defenders (FLD)\, winner of the 2018 UN Prize in the field of Human Rights\, is an Irish based international organization founded in 2001 with the specific aim of protection HRDs at risk. DESCRIPTION:Long time Channel Foundation grantee partner\, Dr. Sakena Yacoobi\, President & Executive Director\, Creating Hope International and President & Executive Director\, Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) delivered this year’s J. Jobe and Marguerite Jacqmin Soffa Lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Oct 12th\, 2021 at 4pm at the Alumni Lounge of the Pyle Center (the lecture was in person)\, 702 Langdon St.\, Madison\, WI. \nThe title of the lecture was: “As Women Rise\, So Does the Nation.” \nThe event was sponsored by the UW Human Rights Program\, the Global Legal Studies Division\, UW Center for South Asia\, and the UW International Division. \nEvent Description: Women’s rights are human rights and essential to the advancement of any nation. Nations with protections for women’s rights are stronger and more prosperous. We can see\, as women in Afghanistan gained rights\, the nation became more prosperous and peaceful. With a population where greater than 60% of the people are under 30\, they have spent their lives connected to the rest of the world\, unlike Afghan people in the 1990’s. Demonstrations against undemocratic principles that violate human rights occur regularly\, led by women not willing to be intimidated by guns in the hands of those they oppose. Afghan women wish to work and go to school\, with the support of the young men who stand with them. The loss of human rights anywhere\, leads to the loss of rights everywhere. SUMMARY:An Inspiring Conversation: A Pakistani Veteran Feminist’s Journey in Creating Safe Spaces for Women and Girls
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed women’s human rights activist Rukhshanda Naz joined us on Sept. 13\, 2019\, in person\, from her home country of Pakistan in a conversation facilitated by University of Washington Law School Professor Alejandra Gonza.  Rukhshanda brought with her 30 years of experience as a human rights activist and shed light on how the field of women’s human rights has shifted within in her community and globally. Rukhshanda is a longtime advisor for Channel grantee partner Global Fund for Women (GFW)\, having recommended and vetted over a dozen local Pakistani women’s human rights groups to receive funding. Most recently\, Rukhshanda and her efforts to end early and forced marriage in Pakistan were featured in GFW’s highly anticipated docuseries Fundamental. \nIn addition to advising GFW\, Rukhshanda has also worked with the Women’s Regional Network\, another Channel grantee partner that builds peace in South Asia. \nA lawyer by profession\, Rukhshanda predominantly works in the KP region\, situated in the northwest part of Pakistan\, along the Afghanistan border\, an area that has historically been affected by militarism\, isolation\, and human rights violations. Despite resistance from the state and other religious institutions\, there remains a strong women’s movement working to redefine gender normative standards. Jackson School of International Studies. \nNews stories about Syria in the international media often feature the voices of aid workers\, UN policy-makers\, and academics; rarely do we hear from Syrians themselves unless they are victims of bombings or refugees fleeing the war. Seldom do we hear first-hand about the hard work Syrian human rights advocates and organizers are doing to strengthen their country. The voices of Syrian women are particularly absent. \nYet Syrian women are powerful leaders in advancing their rights and the rights of their communities. It is critical that they themselves participate in the conversations about—and solutions to—the protracted violence on the ground. Join us for a panel discussion to hear how Syrian women are organizing to gain ownership of their lives\, their rights\, and their futures as well as those of their communities. Activists Rula Asad of the Syrian Female Journalists’ Network\, and Anna Fleischer\, of Women Now for Development\, will share with us the realities and priorities of Syrian women-led organizing for human rights and justice in Syria. SUMMARY:Environmental Defenders Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Channel Foundation helped organize an Environmental Defenders Dialogue about how to address attacks on environmental human rights defenders around the world on Sept. 27\, 2017. The Dialogue featured Channel grantee partners Central American Women’s Fund/FCAM\, Front Line Defenders\, Global Greengrants Fund\, Urgent Action Fund\, and many others who protect human and environmental rights. \nPeople around the world are being are being harassed\, attacked\, criminalized\, and killed in increasing numbers for protecting the land they depend on for survival. According to reports by Global Witness and The Guardian\, 98 environmental defenders were murdered in just the first half of 2017. These threats particularly target women and Indigenous peoples. \nPeer funders and Kumi Naidoo (Former Executive Director\, Greenpeace International) discussed and engaged with experts and frontline defenders about what is being done to protect environmental defenders\, prevent attacks\, and hold perpetrators accountable. \nThe workshop was co-hosted by Channel\, the Mize Family Foundation\, Grassroots Climate Solutions Fund (Thousand Currents)\, and Trust for Mutual Understanding and held at the Motif Seattle\, directly after the close of Environmental Grantmakers Association’s Annual Retreat.

SUMMARY:Bettina Cruz Speaker Series: Climate Change and Land Rights in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous rights defender Bettina Cruz associated with Channel grantee partners Global Fund for Women\, and the Mesoamerican Women Human Rights Defenders Initiative (IM- Defensoras)\, traveled to Seattle to discuss the fight against climate change and land rights in Mexico on October 4th and 5th\, 2016. \nBettina Cruz is a defender of Indigenous land rights in Tehuantepec\, Mexico. As a Binnizá Indigenous woman and member of the Assembly of Istmo of Tehuantepec Indigenous Peoples in Defense of Land and Territory\, Bettina works to counter the impact of private companies operating wind farms on Indigenous lands\, without obtaining free\, prior\, and informed consent (FPIC). Bettina is also a member of the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico. In response to her activism\, the Mexican Federal Government launched criminal charges against Bettina in 2012. Bettina demonstrated inspiring resilience throughout the course of her trial\, which brought threats\, assault\, and arbitrary detainment against her. These charges were finally dismissed in February of 2015 \nOn October 4th\, Channel Foundation\, grantee partner Global Fund for Women\, and Pangea Global Giving co-hosted a conversation that discussed the central role that women’s organizations throughout Latin America play in the struggle for justice and basic human rights. \nOn October 5th\, Channel partnered with the University of Washington’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, American Ethnic Studies\, American Indian Studies\, and the Center for Human Rights departments to host an event where Cruz discussed her work in the struggle for Indigenous people’s rights.

SUMMARY:Berta Cáceres\, Activism and Solidarity: Social Struggles in Honduras and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:On Monday April 25\, 2016 at 7pm\, the Channel Foundation co-hosted a memorial panel discussion for Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores\, an Indigenous (Lenca) Honduran environmental activist who was assassinated on March 3\, 2016. Channel had just hosted her for a series of events in Seattle five months previously and wanted to honor her incredible work while coming together with others to mourn her loss. Berta’s assassination made the human rights defenders work Channel funds personal and all the more vivid. \nShe was co-founder and coordinator of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras and won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015 for “a grassroots campaign that successfully pressured the world’s largest dam builder to pull out of the Agua Zarca Dam” at the Río Gualcarque. Her death sparked expressions of solidarity\, outrage\, and organizing around the world. This panel discussion examined what Berta’s life and death can teach us about solidarity and struggle in Central America and beyond. \nThe event was moderated by Jose Antonio Lucero\, Chair of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Washington. Amongst others the panel included Brady Piñero Walkinshaw\, who at the time was a member of the Washington State House of Representatives\, representing the 43rd legislative district. Before joining the legislature\, Walkinshaw worked on youth leadership programs in Colonia Villanueva\, an urban slum on the outskirts of Honduras capital\, Tegucigalpa \nThe event was co-hosted by the UW Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, UW Center for Human Rights\, Channel Foundation\, Garinagu Houngua\, Community Alliance for Global Justice.

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice Activist Series featuring Berta Cáceres and Miriam Miranda
DESCRIPTION:On November 16th\, 2015\, the Channel Foundation along with grantee partner the Fund for Global Human Rights and others welcomed two globally renowned environmental justice leaders to Seattle: Berta Cáceres\, winner of the 2015 Goldman Prize\, the world’s largest environmental prize\, and Miriam Miranda\, winner of the 2015 Food Sovereignty Prize. The events offered Seattleites a chance to learn from these incredible activists about how they fought to defend the rights and natural resources of indigenous peoples in Honduras despite death threats\, false arrests and kidnapping. \nThe activists spoke to several different audiences in different locations: \nSupporting Environmental Justice: How Donors Can Be Effective Allies to Grassroots Movements (with Northwest Global Donors Exchange (NW-GDX)\, Pangea Giving\, and Jolkona). \nIndigenous Environmental Activism in Central America: A Conversation with Award-Winning Activists (with the University of Washington’s Department of Latin-American and Caribbean Studies and the Center for Human Rights) \nDiscussion: The Way Forward in Central America: Indigenous Rights\, Land and Resource Rights\, and Grassroots Activism (in Spanish only) (with El Centro de la Raza). \n \nBerta Caceres shared how she\, with her organization Consejo de Organizaciones Populares y Indigenas de Hondures (COPINH)\, rallied the indigenous Lenca people of Honduras–a country with massive socioeconomic inequality and human rights violations–and waged a grassroots campaign that successfully pressured the world’s largest dam builder to pull out of the Agua Zarca Dam. (Tragically Berta was assassinated a few months after these events on March 3rd\, 2016. Global news continues to cover her killing and the search for justice. Channel co-hosted a memorial event on April 25\, 2016.) \n  \n  \n  \n \nMiriam Miranda\, leader of the Honduran Black Fraternal Organization (OFRANEH)\, has braved detention\, tear-gas burns and beatings at the hands of police during her work with the 46 communities of the Afro-indigenous Garífuna of Honduras to defend their territories\, natural resources\, identity\, and land rights.

SUMMARY:Lucha Castro and the Story of Mexican Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Channel Foundation co-hosted an event with grantee partner Front Line Defenders and with Seattle community organization El Centro de la Raza on June 4th\, 2015 featuring Lucha Castro\, an incredible Mexican human rights activist who works in Chihuahua to promote and protect the rights of women and offer legal and psychological support to women victims of violence. \nIn April 2015 Front Line Defenders and Verso Books published La Lucha: The Story of Lucha Castro and Human Rights in Mexico – the first book in a series of nonfiction graphic novels. La Lucha features the real life stories of women human rights defenders (WHRDs) in northern Mexico who confront lethal challenges in order to promote human rights\, justice and accountability. A series of vignettes threaded together by one of the leading Mexican WHRDs\, Lucha Castro\, the book offers a rich depiction of the complexity and challenges in the lives of WHRDs and the profound importance of their work. \nFollowing the release of the English edition\, Front Line Defenders and Editorial Resistencia published the Spanish edition in Mexico in November 2015\, launching the book with events at the Senate in Mexico City and in Chihuahua and Oaxaca. \nAs Adam Shapiro\, FLD’s Head of Campaigns wrote\, “This book gives evidence of the risks and adversities human rights defenders across the world have to face to make the rights of their communities a reality. DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Region of Sub-Saharan Africa has witnessed egregious violations of women’s rights in the context of inter-state wars\, foreign intervention in Congolese politics\, and gross state mismanagement. These realities\, combined with the intense demand for the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s natural resources in the global economy\, have resulted in perpetual tensions that curtail development locally.  \nFollowing introductory remarks by Ambassador Roger A. Meece\, former ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, join the World Affairs Council\, the Global Fund for Women\, the Channel Foundation\, and Northwest Global Donors Exchange for a luncheon with Whitney Williams\, founder and CEO of williamsworks\, and Muadi Mukenge\, program director for Sub-Saharan Africa for the Global Fund for Women\, to discuss groundbreaking initiatives focused on making lasting change in the Congo\, including the Great Lakes Women’s Platform.  \n  \nMuadi Mekenge\, program director for Sub-Saharan Africa – Global Fund for Women \nOriginally from the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Muadi brings a background in women’s health\, African politics and economic development and frequently advises donors on their Africa programs. Since joining the Global Fund in 2004\, Mukenge has increased grants in the areas of conflict-prevention\, empowerment of rural women\, and expansion of grants to French-speaking countries. She has led the deepening of support to the women’s movement in the Great Lakes Region (DRC\, Burundi\, CAR)\, and facilitated GFW grantee convenings in DRC and throughout Africa. Muadi presents often\, including at international conferences and media outlets. She is a past Board member of the African Studies Association and New Field Foundation and is currently a Board member of Priority Africa Network. Prior to joining the Global Fund in 2004\, she worked at the Pacific Institute for Women’s Health\, Coro Southern California\, and the African Studies Center at UCLA. Mukenge holds a Master’s Degree in African Studies from UCLA and is a member of the UNWomen Civil Society Advisory Group for West and Central Africa. \n  \n \nWhitney Williams\, Founder and CEO\, williamsworks \nA lifelong advocate for social justice and a believer that anything is possible\, Whitney is Founder and CEO of williamsworks\, an action-oriented consultancy created to amplify and accelerate social impact in the world.
