{"id":2642,"date":"2017-11-03T22:53:33","date_gmt":"2017-11-03T22:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelfoundation.org\/?p=2642"},"modified":"2017-11-03T22:53:33","modified_gmt":"2017-11-03T22:53:33","slug":"new-asia-pacific-fund-for-whrds-launches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trockwebdesign.com\/channel\/2017\/11\/03\/new-asia-pacific-fund-for-whrds-launches\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia Pacific Fund for WHRDs Launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over one hundred women\u2019s human rights advocates and donors gathered in Colombo, Sri Lanka Oct. 24, 2017 to celebrate the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelfoundation.org\/grants\/urgent-action-fund-for-womens-human-rights-asia-pacific\/\">Urgent Action Fund for Women&#8217;s Human Rights Asia &amp; Pacific<\/a> (UAF-AP), the newest sister fund <!--more-->of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelfoundation.org\/grants\/uaf\/\">Urgent Action Fund<\/a> Consortium, and the first rapid response mechanism for women human rights defenders (WHRDs) headquartered within the Asia Pacific region. Channel is thrilled to support the launch and set-up of UAF-AP.<\/p>\n<p>The UAF sister funds are dedicated to supporting women and non-binary\u00a0(lesbian, trans) human rights defenders through Rapid Response grants for urgent threats or opportunities particularly in conflict and post-conflict affected countries.<\/p>\n<p>The launch was part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospera-inwf.org\/#!\/-welcome-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prospera &#8211;   SR7.PMH[\"SR7_3_1\"].state=true;} else if(SR7.PMH[\"SR7_3_1\"].cn-->0)\tsetTimeout( SR7.PMH[\"SR7_3_1\"].fn,19);}};SR7.PMH[\"SR7_3_1\" ].fn();\n\t\t\t\t<\/script>\n\n<p>UAF-AP will be co-directed by Virisila Buadromo, former Executive Director of the Fiji Women\u2019s Rights Movement, and Mary Jane Real of the Philippines, a founding member and former Coordinator of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.defendingwomen-defendingrights.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition<\/a> and previous Regional Coordinator of <a href=\"http:\/\/apwld.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kamala Chandrakirana, current member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/issues\/women\/wgwomen\/pages\/wgwomenindex.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination Against Women in Law and in Practice<\/a> and founder of Indonesia\u2019s National Commission on Violence Against Women, spoke at the launch in her role as UAF-AP Chairperson of the Board.<\/p>\n<p>Subha Wijesiriwardena, prominent Sri Lankan feminist, delivered the launch event&#8217;s keynote, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogsmw.com\/2017\/10\/25\/intergenerational-feminisms-sustaining-our-radical-movements-keynote-at-uaf-ap-launch-transcript\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intergenerational feminisms &amp; sustaining our radical movements<\/a>.\u00a0 In her address, Subha referenced her renowned mother, activist Sunila Abeysekera, who passed away in 2013: &#8220;in 2005, my mother Sunila Abeysekera convened more than one hundred women human rights defenders from all over the world, at this very location. Sometimes, in moments where I am particularly angry about how socially regressive Sri Lanka is becoming, I have tried to picture that conference full of women, all kinds of women \u2013 and I have often thought sadly that such a radical, powerful gathering of women could never occur in Sri Lanka again.
