{"id":35452,"date":"2025-10-29T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trockwebdesign.com\/channel\/?p=35452"},"modified":"2026-01-16T13:20:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:20:44","slug":"solutions-amongst-scarcity-for-southeast-asian-lbq-activists-southeast-asian-lbq-activists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trockwebdesign.com\/channel\/2025\/10\/29\/solutions-amongst-scarcity-for-southeast-asian-lbq-activists-southeast-asian-lbq-activists\/","title":{"rendered":"Solutions Amongst Scarcity for Southeast Asian LBQ Activists\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to many metrics,&nbsp;LBQ&nbsp;(Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer)&nbsp;organizations worldwide struggle with scarce&nbsp;resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;With funds often concentrated in the&nbsp;Global North, activists in Southeast Asia are&nbsp;left&nbsp;even further behind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trockwebdesign.com\/channel\/grantees\/afln\/\">Asia Feminist LBQ Network (AFLN)<\/a>,\u00a0recently\u00a0published\u00a0a\u00a0report, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/asialbqnetwork.org\/2025\/10\/aflnreport-resilient-in-the-face-of-scarcity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resilient in the Face of Scarcity<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0(Fall\u00a02025)\u00a0highlighting\u00a0the unique challenges LBQ organizations in Southeast Asia face. This report is the first of its kind to focus on\u00a0LBQ\u00a0groups in\u00a0this region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Findings: Regional LBQ activists face unique challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFLN surveyed&nbsp;activists from 18 LBQ groups across nine&nbsp;countries in&nbsp;Southeast Asia, where&nbsp;the LBQ human&nbsp;rights organization&nbsp;is based.&nbsp;They&nbsp;examined&nbsp;the complex struggles that rise both within and outside of LBQ&nbsp;organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through this report, AFLN hopes to engage&nbsp;funders and human activists&nbsp;in addressing the&nbsp;systemic&nbsp;barriers&nbsp;faced by&nbsp;communities within the LGBTQIA+&nbsp;movement&nbsp;that often go unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They found the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Invisibility&nbsp;and&nbsp;shrinking spaces:&nbsp;<\/strong>Activists report a lack of&nbsp;space to discuss LBQ rights.&nbsp;Meanwhile,&nbsp;how&nbsp;LBQ advocates&nbsp;are&nbsp;often required to&nbsp;be \u201cout\u201d&nbsp;poses threats of exclusion and security concerns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shortage of&nbsp;staff and&nbsp;limited&nbsp;capacity:&nbsp;<\/strong>Groups&nbsp;are chronically&nbsp;understaffed,&nbsp;fueling a cycle of&nbsp;overworking and burnout&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Funding challenges:&nbsp;<\/strong>Issues include language barriers and insufficient grant-writing skills, along with a lack of LBQ funding opportunities and&nbsp;difficulties in fulfilling funder\u2019s requirements. The result is&nbsp;instable&nbsp;short-term and&nbsp;project-based&nbsp;funding.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Interpersonal&nbsp;conflicts&nbsp;and hostility:&nbsp;<\/strong>Sexism, misogyny, exclusion from local feminist&nbsp;groups and online attacks&nbsp;all take their&nbsp;tolls&nbsp;on LBQ activists.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Unmet needs of LBQ activists:&nbsp;<\/strong>Unresolved trauma and a blur between work and community creates difficult dynamics, only worsened by the realities of a non-profit environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recommendations: Solutions that serve the Global South<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through this report, AFLN hopes to engage funders and human&nbsp;rights&nbsp;activists in addressing the systemic barriers against communities within the LBTQIA+ movement that often go unnoticed.&nbsp;They find that LBQ groups may require alternatives to human rights organizations&nbsp;that best meet&nbsp;the needs of those in the Global South.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFLN recommends&nbsp;that LBQ groups&nbsp;incorporate healing into&nbsp;the&nbsp;larger&nbsp;movement.&nbsp;They suggest funders&nbsp;open&nbsp;up&nbsp;more flexibility and opportunities&nbsp;for&nbsp;these organizations. Regional groups&nbsp;can&nbsp;foster networking&nbsp;and mentorship for activists.
