On January 31, 2022, the <\/span>United Nations Human Rights Council<\/span><\/a> held Haiti\u2019s third <\/span>Universal Periodic Review (UPR<\/span><\/a>) as an evaluation of the country\u2019s human rights compliance. The Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH)<\/a>, long-time Channel grantee partner, responded to this UPR in a couple webinars. <\/span>On January 31, 2022, the <\/span>United Nations Human Rights Council<\/span><\/a> held Haiti\u2019s third <\/span>Universal Periodic Review (UPR<\/span><\/a>) as an evaluation of the country\u2019s human rights compliance. Unfortunately, many civil society organizations feel that the country\u2019s present challenges were glossed over in the Haitian government\u2019s report. This was a disappointment to them and to UN entities who submitted reports showing that Haiti is not only failing to meet its human rights obligations, but access to certain rights has deteriorated since the last review in 2016.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH)<\/span><\/a>, long-time Channel grantee partner working in collaboration with their Haiti-based partner Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI), and a few other organizations, submitted two reports in advance of Haiti\u2019s UPR \u2013 one on <\/span>challenges to the country\u2019s justice sector<\/span><\/a> and another on <\/span>gender-based violence<\/span><\/a>. On February 9, 2022, IJDH hosted a <\/span>panel discussion<\/span><\/a> featuring organizations who worked on these reports with them. The panel discussed the UPR, the Haitian government\u2019s compliance with its recommendations, and the broader human rights situation in Haiti.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
